David Bergman's Inauguration Photograph.

David Bergman uploaded this photo a few days ago and it's nothing short of amazing...if you were anywhere within the Beltway during President Obama's speech, you can probably find yourself.

He writes:

"My final photo is made up of 220 Canon G10 images and the file is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels. It took more than six and a half hours for the Gigapan software to put together all of the images on my Macbook Pro and the completed TIF file is almost 2 gigabytes."

The Ox Rocks.

Happy New Year!  Don't be fooled by the Ox that we got...

In celebration of Chinese New Year, I decided to make myself a delicious traditional Chinese meal:

Ah yeeees, Orange Chicken and Pot Stickers (that's pretty half-Asian in itself).  Please take note:

1. Enough food for the entire population of the Liaoning province.

2. The sweet blue glass goblet.  The metal dragon with red eyes on the front makes it holiday-appropriate.

3. The four sets of chopsticks constituting the lesser-known "Chinese Formal Table Setting."  Unlike in Western cultures (where you start with the outermost utensils and work your way in with each course), proper CFTS manners call for using one pair of chopsticks from the left side of the plate for each BITE.  The diner rotates through the different pairs systematically until the meal is finished.  The pair on the right side of the plate are only to be used in the event of an emergency (i.e., the diner manages to drop the other six chopsticks while eating; a pencil-break tournament breaks out; someone's hair needs putting up; or, there's nothing else worth stealing on the table).

4. The absence of red envelopes.  More than a billion Chinese relatives in the world and no love for this guy?

Anyhow - I hope you enjoy many a Chinese New Year (or Chinese Buffet) to come.

Zaijian!

THE BI-ANNUAL VISIT TO WILLIE'S WEE-NEE WAGON

There are many gems in the Golden Isles, but nothing compares to the experience and cuisine of the one and only Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon. Pink's, Oki-Dog, Carney's, Wiener's Circle, Nathan's Famous, and whatever other bougie hot dog joint you've heard of's got NOTHIN' on Willie's.

Lee and I hit the Wagon up on January 4th. It very well may be the best meal I have all year.

As you can see below, the menu offers a variety of tasty items. I used to roll with the Slaw Dog or the BBQ Dog (which seems to have disappeared), but I decided to rock a Bull Dog (ate it!) and a staple of my post-marching-band-practice meals, the world's greatest Pork Chop Sandwich. Holy moly.

Fries or peppers are an option for sides, both simply wrapped in paper. A must is the sweet tea - brewed so sweet it makes ice cream taste sour by comparison (my mom used to make us dump half the tea out of the cup and fill it back up with water so that the sugar wouldn't instantly deteriorate our teeth).

I had to roll by the old high school stadium...had to get my personal Clear Eyes, Full Hearts on...

Best hotdog I've ever had. The cheese and cole slaw (and tomato and onion and pickles and relish and ketchup and mustard) make it magical.

9-4.

Georgia Tech 3, LSU 38.

I feel it my duty to acknowledge that this happened. I thought that letting weeks pass before posting would calm the pain, but no such luck. I am fully aware of the details of this game, as I regretfully was in attendance. Actually, scratch that - no regrets - I was able to see my boys and celebrate New Year's Eve the way I always dreamed: by consuming 5 Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in a 3-quarter period at a bowl game.

So - Tech's year ends differently than we thought and hoped. ("We are who we thought we were?") The good news is that all signs point to a better team next year - Paul Johnson has restored the excitement in midtown.

The best part about attending the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, however, came after the game. That's when we found the Georgia High School Association football helmet display. When Lee and I turned the corner and saw all those shiny domes on the wall, we went NUTSO.

First things first: Locate the Brunswick High School helmet.
Second: Freak out, force other friends who are anxious to leave stadium to take photos of you pointing to helmet.
Third: Belt out the BHS fight song in the Georgia Dome concourse.
Fourth: Start chanting "Beat Lowndes!", referencing the losses to Lowndes County High School in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Fifth: Engage in a verbal debate with an innocent Lowndes alum who happened to walk by during Step 4.

(that verbal debate went something like this:
Lee and Scotty, the BHS alums: "...we will stand and fight for victory...now and evermore! Beat Lowndes! Beat Lowndes! Beat Lowndes!"
Innocent Lowndes Alum: Whayt y'all say?
LASTBHSA: Beat Lowndes.
ILA: Beat Lowndes?! Whayerre yawl from?
LASTBHSA: We from DA WICK!
ILA: The Weeyuck? Whayerre's thayt?
LASTBHSA: DA WICK!
ILA: Pscht, I ain never heardathayt.
LASTBHSA: Ahem, we're from Brunswick.
ILA: OH! Y'all frum Brunsweeyuck? Thayt's cauws yawl SUCK!)

And that was the last thing I remember from 2008.

Getting all pep rally with it (FFF went to Brookwood, so he just yelled animal and/or siren sounds while we sang).

Happy New Year. In his defense, the French New Year happened some 6 hours before, so it was a long day. Picture was taken at a bar in downtown Atlanta sometime before 1:00 AM on 1/1/09.
